Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan's education initiative, The Primary School, has officially shut down after nearly a decade of operation. The tuition-free school, backed by more than $125 million from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), served children from low-income families by combining education with healthcare and family support services. The closure comes after CZI informed the school's board that it would not continue funding beyond the 2025-26 academic year. The decision affects nearly 540 students enrolled across two campuses in California. Priscilla Chan, a pediatrician, co-founded The Primary School in 2016 with the goal of supporting children beyond academics. The school followed a "whole child" model that combined classroom education with healthcare services, developmental screenings, dental care, mental health support and wellness coaching for parents.
