Gemini Shifts Ad Landscape, Google Retires Android Assistant

Google announced the closure of Google Assistant on Android devices—including phones, tablets, Wear OS smartwatches, headphones, and phone-projected Android Auto—on September 4, replacing it with its Gemini AI assistant integrated deeper into those platforms. Vehicles with Google built-in will keep Google Assistant for now, and the change does not immediately apply to Google Home or Google TV. Google product expert Aswin Jagadeesh described the transition as "a major ecosystem shift" from "the deterministic, micro-task architecture of Google Assistant to the conversational, multimodal capabilities of Google Gemini." The move gives advertisers and media buyers reaching Android consumers a smooth transition into serving real-time content based on personal context, eventually allowing ads across mobile, wearables, and in-car systems. Jagadeesh noted that the upcoming "Gemini Spark" agent system will let phones and home devices understand context, manage complex schedules, and coordinate with apps without requiring hyper-specific "wake-word" phrasing like "hello Google." A May Google post said the shift to always-on infrastructure like Gemini Spark alters how brands reach consumers: rather than bidding on user search terms, advertisers must optimize for autonomous AI agents acting as gatekeepers and transaction-handlers. Google also introduced "Daily Brief," an agent providing a personalized morning reading list that pulls information through Gemini from a user's connected apps, including Gmail inbox updates, Calendar events, and follow-up details, while suggesting immediate next steps.
