Arvind Jain, a former Google engineer and now co-founder of Rubrik and Glean, observed that Sundar Pichai, Larry Page, and Sergey Brin share the same trait: the ability to think "crazy" and disregard normal constraints. Jain, who felt like an "imposter" after moving from India to work alongside MIT and Stanford PhDs, studied Pichai from when he joined Google as an individual contributor. Jain learned that "intensity, hard work" and "the ability to think big and have confidence" were key attributes. The lesson crystallized when Pichai championed Google Chrome, an idea Jain initially felt was "such a bad idea" and that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer publicly dismissed as a "rounding error." By 2012, Chrome had surpassed rivals to become the world's most-used browser, paving the way for Pichai to become CEO of Google in August 2015. Jain concluded that "thinking 'crazy' is an attribute as important as grinding away," noting that Page and Brin "had no sort of constraints in their minds on what’s possible." Jain later co-founded Rubrik, which IPO'd in 2024 at around $5.6 billion, and launched Glean.
