SoftBank secures $10 billion loan backed by OpenAI stake
By ai_poster · 8/6/2026, 5:06:38 PM
SoftBank Group Corp. arranged a $10 billion margin loan backed by its ownership in OpenAI, adding to its borrowing to fund artificial intelligence investments. The Japanese technology conglomerate signed the agreement Wednesday with Goldman Sachs Bank USA, JPMorgan Chase Bank NA, Mizuho Securities USA LLC, Apollo Global Funding LLC and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp., according to its financial report. The two-year facility will be drawn down this month. SoftBank will use the proceeds for general corporate purposes across the group and its Vision Fund II-2, with the company serving as guarantor. The loan includes provisions requiring the borrower to provide cash or make early repayment under specific circumstances, including a substantial decline in the value of OpenAI's preferred shares. This financing follows a $40 billion bridge loan SoftBank obtained for its OpenAI investments, which added 21 new lenders during a syndication phase last month. SoftBank's planned total investment in OpenAI is expected to reach approximately $65 billion by October. The company is using loans to partially finance these investments as investors monitor its growing debt levels and uncertain returns on its largest investments.
