Parents Horrified as Boomer Mawmaws Gift Children Blatant AI Slop Pic…

Parents across the U.S. are receiving AI-generated children’s books from well-meaning grandparents, sometimes causing family tensions, as reported by Wired. One parent in a Reddit post said they reiterated “countless times” that they do not support AI-generated art and drew a hard line against feeding photos into AI or using identifying information, but their mother created storylines based on experiences with the child, modeling characters with similar attributes and using the family’s first names. Services like Imagitime, StoryWonderBook, and Childbook.ai offer ways to insert kids into AI stories. One dad with a seven and three year old told Wired his kids were “bored” by the books, saying after one read they wanted “Little Blue Truck.” Daozhi Xu, a researcher at Macquarie University who published an analysis of the “AI children’s book boom,” said children love a book because the story is interesting, not because their name or image appears, and that AI versions “often lack humor, memorable characters, and dramatic tension.” Comedian Brandon Kirman called his parents’ AI book about his four and two year old “well-meaning on their end, but f**king yikes.” Xu also noted the lack of transparency on how children’s photos are used and stored on AI platforms, “potentially shared with third parties or used to train AI models.”
