Samsung Electronics has begun preparations to produce Tesla's next-generation artificial intelligence chip, the AI5 chip, which will be the first to use an advanced 2-nanometer process. According to Yonhap News Agency on the 13th, Kim Jeong-gon, a senior engineer at Samsung Electronics' foundry division, wrote on LinkedIn that the Tesla-Samsung AI5 chip has completed tape-out and will be produced at Samsung's 2-nanometer process at the Taylor, Texas plant, soon to be installed in Tesla's latest products. The Taylor plant is expected to begin initial operations at the end of this year and start producing products for major clients from next year. Tesla plans to develop the existing AI4 and its upgraded version, as well as the AI5, AI6, and AI6.5 chips for use in robots, autonomous vehicles, and data centers. Samsung Electronics currently produces the AI4 chip in Pyeongtaek-si, Gyeonggi Province, and the AI5 chip will be produced jointly with TSMC. Samsung Electronics' preliminary operating profit for the second quarter of this year came to 8.94 trillion won, with the memory division accounting for 8.4 trillion won and the non-memory division estimated to have posted a loss of 600 billion won, but the company could turn profitable starting next year when Tesla orders begin shipping.
