Gaelic and Breton, the same fight against AI.

At the Interceltic Business Forum in Lorient, Tomás Ó Síocháin, director general of Údarás na Gaeltachta, warned that artificial intelligence could accelerate the disappearance of minority languages from the digital world. He stated that Irish and Breton must now have vast digital resources to avoid being marginalized by new technologies. Large AI models are trained on corpora where English and major languages are overrepresented, putting languages with few digital resources at risk. Ó Síocháin raised the question of who owns the corpora, citing two strategies: Iceland provided data to OpenAI, while the Māori of New Zealand prioritized data sovereignty and their own tools. Údarás is pursuing both paths, assessing major AI models in Irish monthly and experimenting with HubChat for public services. He emphasized that a "good enough" solution is insufficient; models must convey context, nuances, and culture. He hopes the European Union will take more responsibility and announced a conference on linguistic diversity during the next Irish presidency. Breton MP Paul Molac drew a parallel with Breton, noting that daily use depends on presence in tools like spell checkers, GPS, and voice recognition. He recalled the Public Office of the Breton Language's work on voice recognition for direct translation, saying it is "absolutely necessary if we want our languages to endure [...] for the century to come," likening biodiversity to "glottodiversity."
