LPL Financial generated more than $440 million in revenue from cash sweeps on clients’ uninvested cash holdings, tying the firm’s bottom line to idle client cash and rates. As AI changes cash management and lawsuits over cash sweeps practices abound, LPL is reviewing its strategy. Separately, a team managing $1.5 billion at Morgan Stanley chose to stay in the wirehouse channel, jumping to Merrill for reasons including client needs. In another development, mega-RIA Mariner’s five-year deal with Humanity Labs will provide an AI “workforce” equivalent to 700 full-time employees, placing it at the forefront of scaling with the tech; these AI “employees” will handle tasks including billing, client onboarding and compliance review.
