Mistral AI announced Tuesday a three-part expansion of its infrastructure business: regional inference endpoints for choosing whether AI workloads run in Europe or the United States, a new "Priority Tier" with an uptime guarantee, and a coalition of European enterprises making multi-year compute commitments to underwrite 200 megawatts of infrastructure across Europe by the end of 2027 and a full gigawatt by the end of 2030. The company will also begin hosting third-party open models, starting with GLM-5.2 from Z.ai, the Chinese AI lab formerly known as Zhipu. Mistral currently operates less than 200 megawatts of capacity. Near-term buildout includes a 44-megawatt facility near Paris operational in the second quarter of this year, a 23-megawatt facility in Sweden with EcoDataCenter, and a 10-megawatt site in Les Ulis, France, online in the third quarter. Research firm Epoch AI calculates a typical one-gigawatt AI data center requires roughly $38 billion in upfront capital expenditure, with servers and GPUs consuming the majority of the cost. Goldman Sachs Research pegs next-generation AI facilities at $15 million to $20 million per megawatt before accounting for chips. Timothée Lacroix, Mistral's co-founder and chief technology officer, told VentureBeat the announcement strengthens the inference part of its infrastructure.
