Daniel Levine, a keynote speaker specializing in tourism trends, found generative AI useful for static information, such as planning a seven-day drive down Chile’s coast and discovering a Terminal Transfer Bus at Chicago’s O'Hare Airport. However, a study from SEO Travel found ChatGPT’s suggestions often send people to places that don’t exist, fail at logistical planning, or recommend venues outside operating hours; the study asked ChatGPT to plan 100 two-day weekend itineraries in top destinations. Alice Ford, an adventure filmmaker and travel host, tested ChatGPT for a YouTube video and got a few new ideas for Los Angeles activities, but struggled to find real tour operators and was suggested a seasonal activity requiring a 5-hour, one-way drive. Levine noted AI chatbots have offered misleading replies, such as listing closed hotels in Tokyo with 2-bedroom suites. According to Longwoods International, fourteen percent of American travelers have recently used ChatGPT to plan a trip, while about a third plan to use it in the future. Levine advises treating ChatGPT as a tool, not a travel agent, and spending time to refine its answers.
