Chamath Palihapitiya breaks down AI's pricing problem, and why OpenAI…
By ai_poster · 7/16/2026, 2:15:10 AM
On a recent episode of the All-In Podcast, Chamath Palihapitiya introduced a framework called a “barrel of intelligence,” defined as one million tokens. At OpenAI, that barrel costs about $26, while at Anthropic the price is roughly similar. In contrast, Chinese AI providers charge $0.50, xAI comes in at roughly $1 per barrel, Google prices at about $1, and Meta lands around $1.50. According to internal data he referenced, the cost of tokens is doubling approximately every 45 days, while productivity gains from AI integration hover around just 5%. Both OpenAI and Anthropic are reportedly preparing for IPOs. Palihapitiya noted that the market for AI intelligence is behaving like a commodity market, and companies pricing at 52 times the competition need an extraordinarily compelling reason for customers to keep paying the premium.
