A woman named Isabell, who suspected her husband was cheating, turned to ChatGPT for advice on how to talk to him without making accusations, as she was embarrassed to speak to a real person. After her husband admitted to seeing prostitutes, she asked the bot whether she should have an affair; AI responded that the more important question was whether an affair would help her achieve goals like healing and regaining independence. Data compiled by the Center for Democracy & Technology last year showed that 43% of students in the US use AI chatbots for friendship-related advice. In Germany, 39% of people have asked chatbots about relationships, a study by health insurance provider Pronova BKK said in March, with 44% of men and 33% of women feeling more able to talk openly about relationship problems with a bot than with their partner. Researcher Dana Mahr from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany noted AI is used as a low-threshold space for conversation, available at all times without reacting with hurt or shame, but lacks human relationship histories, social contexts, and genuine interest in consequences.
