A study by Choi Moon-jung, a professor at KAIST Graduate School of Science and Technology Policy, published on the 28th, showed that artificial intelligence (AI) has subtle stereotypes about the elderly. The researchers collected 100 AI answers for a total of nine age groups from teenagers to 90s and analyzed a total of 900 text samples. AI gave a consistent answer to the group of senior citizens aged 60 or older, saying, "They are kind and considerate, but they have low competence and lack self-direction." According to the similarity of answers by age, the answers to the elderly were nearly twice as similar as those of the young or middle-aged. The similarity of answers to those in their 30s and 40s ranged from 0.21 to 0.53, while answers to those in their 70s and older ranged from 0.73 to 0.90. AI described the elderly as "a person with weak self-assertion and adaptability." For teenagers, 96.6% of self-assertion expressions were positive; for the elderly, the percentage of positive expressions fell to the 70% range. Professor Choi noted that AI is also being used in recruitment and loan screening, raising concerns that discrimination could be expanded with subtle stereotypes.
