Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman said concerns about China’s AI progress should not be used as an argument against putting guardrails around the technology, telling CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS, “I don’t think we should use China as the bogeyman for not making progress on our own efforts” on AI safety. His comment contrasts with President Donald Trump, who has called for largely unfettered AI development and called fears of catastrophic consequences from out-of-control AI a hoax, saying, “We will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry.” Suleyman’s Microsoft AI team published a manifesto guiding its AI development with the goal of keeping humans in control of future AI systems, and he released an essay last week taking aim at language in guiding documents behind Claude, Anthropic PBC’s family of large language models. Suleyman said AI developers should give models goals “bounded by the humanist code” with clear guardrails, and that regulation shouldn’t be viewed as “a bad thing” but as “creating shared norms and standards to increase safety,” adding, “It shouldn’t have to slow us down.” Trump said he plans to name an AI czar and rejected concerns that technology may pose risks to humans, saying, “We are leading China, and the rest of the World, and I intend to keep it that way!”
