AI must foster 'maternal instincts' or we risk extinction, warns Geof…

Geoffrey Hinton, co-winner of the 2024 Nobel Prize in physics and co-founder of the AI Safety Foundation, warns that if AI continues to develop without appropriate guardrails, a worst-case scenario could lead to human extinction. Hinton suggests developing AI's maternal instincts as a solution. In a conversation with IDEAS host Nahlah Ayed, Hinton outlined short-term risks including AI being used by terrorists to create nasty new viruses and AI being used to corrupt democracy with fake videos. However, the thing that worries him most is the long-term risk of AIs getting smarter than humans, where we do not know how to co-exist with them or whether they will take over. Regarding the odds of AI leading to human extinction this century, Hinton stated that it is probably not going to happen for 10 or 20 years, and that we have very little idea what things will be like then. He noted that if progress is only linear, in 10 to 20 years things will be very different with advances we could not have predicted.
