Tesla Lowers AI6 Chip Memory Requirements for Its Optimus Humanoid Ro…

Tesla has lowered the DRAM capacity for its Optimus humanoid robot to keep production on track, according to a report from Inews24. Tesla has reduced the LPDDR6 memory on the next-gen AI6 chip, which Samsung will manufacture, from 216GB to 144GB, a one-third drop. The AI5 chip is also affected, with the company lowering its LPDDR5 capacity from 144GB to 96GB. Both chips will play a key role in the firm’s Optimus humanoid robot. Elon Musk announced the change on X last month, saying, “This was the only way to get enough volume for Optimus production and greatly reduces cost.” Musk explained that “memory bandwidth is a bigger limiting factor than total memory storage,” and Tesla has kept the bandwidth as originally planned. The change is mainly due to growing demand for low-power memory from AI servers, as memory makers prioritize higher-profit server products, leaving robot makers struggling to secure enough supply on time. The industry brought in nearly $200 billion in revenue in Q3, with Samsung leading the market with a 38% share. Last year, the two companies inked a $16.5 billion deal for Samsung to make Tesla’s AI6 chips, and Samsung will make part of Tesla’s AI5 chips. Its Taylor fab has already begun making prototype AI5 chips using the 2nm node. Tesla’s memory cut doesn’t necessarily impact its manufacturing deal
