A Fundación Maldita.es investigation identified 25 verified Instagram accounts featuring AI-generated personas, such as "Baba Matryona," posing as health advisors to sell supplements on Amazon. Baba Matryona, a Siberian village healer offering a cure for high blood pressure, has a Meta Verified blue check and accumulates more than 6 million views on her videos, despite being an AI persona. Her bio links to an Amazon storefront selling Jupi, a hydration powder whose product page states it is "not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or health condition." None of the 25 creators are real people, but all have a Meta Verified blue check, a service Meta markets as helping creators “build more confidence with new audiences” with “search optimisation” and “prioritization and increased visibility across some surfaces.” These 25 accounts accumulate more than five million subscribers and 389 million views. Meta's Authentic Identity Representation policy restricts accounts engaging in identity misrepresentation, and the verified badge ordinarily requires a valid photo ID and a profile name matching the subscriber's legal name. However, the policy allows verification using "activity across Meta products, such as name tenure and profile completeness," which synthetic accounts with matching profiles in Threads and Facebook could achieve.
