Why Leaders Like Modi & Macron Are Bidding for AI Investment

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron are personally engaging with tech executives to secure AI infrastructure investments. Macron placed AI infrastructure at the centre of France's economic strategy and hosted AI firm leaders at the G7 summit in June 2026. He asked SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son to invest billions into France's data centre strategy, leading to plans for 3.1GW of AI data centre infrastructure by 2031, part of a €75bn (US$81bn) investment programme aiming for 5GW of French AI data centre capacity. Macron committed to securing 3GW of power for France. Modi met Amazon CEO Andy Jassy last week, thanking him for a record US$48bn investment into India, with US$21bn for AI and cloud infrastructure. Modi also met Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, and Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan in the previous year for similar AI investment plans. Modi hosted top tech leaders at the India AI Impact Summit earlier this year, resulting in several billion-dollar tech investments. India does not currently manufacture AI-ready chips or any US- or China-level AI model.
