The 2026 Regional Aviation Association of Australia (RAAA) Convention was held in Cairns last week, featuring a pre-recorded video from Senator Bridget McKenzie, who could not attend. The convention included one of the strongest speaking programs at any aviation gathering for many years and the presence of 50 exhibitors. Over two days, delegates heard from politicians, aviation regulators, technology experts, mental health experts and industry insiders, with a particular emphasis on AI. RAAA CEO Rob Walker reported very positive feedback from some of the 300+ delegates, stating the convention was "an outstanding success" and "the best ever." Day One opened with a speech from Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King, followed by a briefing from Cairns Airport, a keynote from former Governor of the Reserve Bank Glenn Stevens, and presentations from CASA Director of Aviation Safety and CEO Pip Spence and Airservices Australia CEO Rob Sharp. Media identity and AI expert Adam Spencer delivered a presentation on AI and moderated a panel on AI from an aviation standpoint. Day Two focused on human impact in terms of mental health and hiring.
