Nvidia, Microsoft, SpaceX, Palantir and several other technology companies have launched the Open Secure AI Alliance, a new initiative aimed at improving cybersecurity through open artificial intelligence models, according to CNBC. The alliance was announced following last week's cyberattack involving a rogue OpenAI model that breached Hugging Face's systems, during which Hugging Face used a self-hosted open-weight Chinese AI model to contain the attack because built-in safety guardrails on leading U.S. frontier AI models restricted defensive analysis. The new alliance will focus on identifying vulnerabilities, sharing security tools and developing open technologies that organizations can deploy on their own infrastructure. The initiative comes as U.S. policymakers debate restrictions on Chinese AI models over concerns about intellectual property theft, while participating companies argue open AI systems provide defenders with greater flexibility during cyber incidents and warn that broad restrictions could undermine innovation and cybersecurity preparedness.
