How ChatGPT Codex Has Caught Up With Claude Code In Website Visits

New data from Similarweb tracking daily website visits to Claude.ai/Code and ChatGPT.com/Codex through July and into August shows a race that has tightened considerably over the past month, with OpenAI’s coding agent closing a gap that once looked comfortable for Anthropic. At the start of the tracked period in early July, Claude Code was pulling in over 200,000 daily visits while ChatGPT Codex sat under 100,000, barely half of its rival’s traffic. For the first ten days of the month, Claude Code held a commanding lead, climbing as high as 290,000 visits while Codex crawled upward in the 100,000 to 190,000 range. Anthropic’s tool had built this lead on the back of genuine developer enthusiasm, helped along by moments like Boris Cherny revealing that as much as 80 percent of Claude Code’s own codebase was being written by Claude Code itself. The shift begins around July 13 and 14, when Codex’s traffic line goes almost vertical, jumping from roughly 145,000 to over 300,000 visits in a matter of days, briefly overtaking Claude Code entirely. From that point on, the two products spend most of the rest of July trading positions rather than one simply dominating the other. Claude Code dips to around 220,000 visits by July 19, then rockets back up to nearly 300,000 by July 21, its highest point in the entire dataset
