An open call for proposals and reporting practices on artificial intelligence has been issued, inviting critical engagement with AI’s impact on fundamental aspects of life, both globally and with a focus on Egypt. The call notes that AI is often framed in utopian language, with Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, declaring the arrival of “singularity” two times, while Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google’s DeepMind, promises we are “near” it. Hundreds of billions of dollars of capital are being thrown into AI-related investments, roughly 1 percent of global GDP. Data centers are doubling global demand for copper, and a Bloomberg analysis concluded that “two-thirds of new data centers built or in development since 2022 are in places already gripped by high levels of water stress.” In 2024, Egypt saw US$278 million in data center investments, projected to grow to $694 million by 2030. The call seeks proposals on subjects such as labor, governance, health, environmental impact, entertainment, people’s history with AI, the political economy of AI, or AI in the Global South, aiming to demystify the prophetic discourse and examine the politics and power behind the claims.
