BYD has officially unveiled its AI robot Xiao Di, entering the humanoid robotics field as a logical expansion of its business model, leveraging its position as one of the world’s largest manufacturers of batteries, electric motors, and power electronics to reuse components from vehicle production cost-effectively. Industry observers see a similar advantage to Tesla’s Optimus project. Competition within China’s automotive industry is accelerating, with manufacturers including Xpeng with Iron, Chery with Aimoga, and others developing humanoid robots for industrial and service applications. On July 28, 2026, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved strict import restrictions on newly developed humanoid robots from China as well as connected inverters, citing national security, protecting the domestic AI industry, and preventing potential espionage and cyber risks to critical infrastructure. The rules target new models not previously approved for the US market, affecting upcoming androids such as BYD’s Xiao Di and wider Chinese competition equally, effectively closing off the US market to them for the time being. As a result, Tesla Optimus faces little direct competition there, while in China and numerous other international markets, the race for humanoid AI robots continues to accelerate.
