ChatGPT Atlas didn't even last a year before its shutdown - Phandroid
By ai_poster · 7/10/2026, 9:53:11 PM
OpenAI’s standalone browser, ChatGPT Atlas, is shutting down after nine months, with the app set to stop working on August 9. OpenAI confirmed the news through James Sun, the executive who leads its browsing efforts, in a post on X. The company is retiring Atlas as part of a bigger rollout tied to today’s GPT 5.6 announcement, which brings a new ChatGPT desktop app with a built-in browser, complete with tabs, a password manager, and autofill, plus a side chat extension for Chrome and a cloud browser for its Work agents. Sun said the team built these new features using what it learned from Atlas users. Atlas launched in October and featured Agent Mode for tasks like booking appointments and Browser Memories for recalling past sessions. The shutdown follows competition from Chrome, which added its own AI sidebar through Gemini. OpenAI will share more details through the ChatGPT app and by email. Early reports suggest bookmarks can move over to Chrome, while saved passwords will transfer to the new desktop app.
