Sequoia Capital Commits KES 1.3 Trillion to AI Startups in Historic T…

Sequoia Capital is reportedly committing $10 billion (KES 1.3 trillion) to artificial intelligence startups, marking the largest single capital deployment in the venture firm’s 54-year history. Driven by managing partners Alfred Lin and Pat Grady, the fund targets AI infrastructure and foundational models, concentrating on established category leaders requiring massive compute resources. This follows a separate $7 billion (KES 910 billion) expansion fund closed in April 2026, making it the firm's second major raise under Lin and Grady in under four months. The strategy was validated when Sequoia led a $500 million Series D round into voice AI leader ElevenLabs, valuing it at $11 billion. The firm previously invested $10 billion into OpenAI in 2023 and $6 billion into Elon Musk’s xAI in 2024, but passed on early opportunities to back Anthropic. The leadership restructuring, which saw Lin and Grady take over growth-stage investments from Roelof Botha, has accelerated this AI mandate. Management consultants project the global AI sector will require $2 trillion in annual revenue by 2030.
