John Jumper, who shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on AlphaFold, announced Friday that he is leaving Google DeepMind for Anthropic after "nearly 9 years" at the company. Jumper posted on X, crediting DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis for taking "a real chance letting me lead the AlphaFold team just six months after finishing my PhD." According to Bloomberg, Jumper had recently been a key member of Google's team developing coding tools. His move follows Character AI co-founder Noam Shazeer also announcing this week that he is leaving DeepMind for OpenAI. Jumper and Hassabis won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for AlphaFold, an AI model that predicts the three-dimensional structure of proteins.
