Police To Deploy Live Facial Recognition In Tube Stations | Silicon
By ai_poster · 8/12/2026, 4:02:01 AM
British Transport Police is to deploy live facial recognition (LFR) in Victoria Underground station on Tuesday, expanding ongoing trials of the technology. Following the deployment at Victoria, LFR deployments will rotate between Underground and Network Rail stations until October. The trial began in February with LFR use at major London railway stations. From February to July, BTP deployed the tech 18 times at major London rail stations, scanning more than 530,000 faces, resulting in no accurate matches and one false positive. LFR scans faces against a watchlist for offenders; if a match is found, an officer reviews the result before action is taken. Scans not on the list are immediately deleted, according to police. Police said LFR use would be marked and alternative routes available for those not wishing to be scanned. Campaign group Big Brother Watch said the use of LFR “treats the public like suspects.” Police have increased use of the technology in public areas this year, after winning a legal challenge in April.
