Retailers Want Chatbots To Send Shoppers, Not Own Them

Retailers including Walmart, Ulta, and Wayfair aim to appear in shopping answers from ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini while keeping checkout and customer data on their own sites. Adobe Analytics reports that 41% of US consumers used generative AI for shopping in June, and Juniper Research expects shoppers to spend $8 billion this year after AI agents send them to retail sites. Adobe also found visitors referred by AI tools generated 41% higher revenue per visit than visitors from traditional channels. Brands are tuning product pages to how chatbots answer questions, not just search rankings. If checkout stays on a retailer’s site, the brand captures “first-party” data—browsing, abandoned carts, purchases—which powers personalization and loyalty programs. AI referrals can be high-intent, but value depends on who owns checkout; on-site checkout keeps the richest data and lowers future acquisition costs, while off-site checkout lets platforms raise take-rates. OpenAI’s move suggests chatbots may act as a discovery layer, with businesses controlling checkout and customer databases better positioned to turn AI-driven
