Elon Musk's AI startup xAI launched Grokipedia in October, an encyclopedia that copied Wikipedia pages and used a large language model to field user edits, reflecting Musk's views. The site was criticized for citing a neo-Nazi forum, promoting Tesla's Cybertruck, and validating conspiracy theories. According to a Lawfare investigation, Grokipedia, now owned by SpaceX after merging with Musk's AI efforts, has entirely stopped updating itself earlier this year. Lawfare concluded that no entry has changed in more than three months, and the site's edit log has broken, making it impossible to track accepted or rejected user-suggested changes. By January, the Tow Center for Digital Journalism observed that xAI's Grok was making more edits to its own articles than acting on human-suggested ones. Lawfare submitted an "uncomplicated factual update" about SpaceX having launched its IPO in June, but the Grokipedia entry remained stagnant. The most recent approved update Lawfare located, to the entry about OpenAI's ChatGPT, dates back to April 24. Lawfare found 13,002 suggestions that "sit unresolved, trapped 'in review.'" The site has become a ghost town, a redundant and misinformation-filled copy of Wikipedia.
