Smith Myers Communications has announced ARTEMIS AI, a new artificial intelligence capability for its ARTEMIS Mobile Phone Detection & Location System (MPDLS), at the Farnborough International Airshow. The technology provides secure, onboard decision support for mission-critical operations without relying on cloud connectivity, using an embedded large language model (LLM) within a closed system to keep data under operator control in disconnected or contested environments. Andrew Munro, Managing Director of Smith Myers, said the system enables operators to achieve more with less effort while maintaining complete control. The capability builds on MPDLS technology used in search and rescue (SAR) operations, where detecting and locating mobile phones from aircraft helps identify people in distress, support search areas, prioritize resources, and improve situational awareness. ARTEMIS AI assists operators through natural language interaction, mission planning support, system optimization, health monitoring, and post-mission analysis, and can identify anomalies, recommend actions, and assist with troubleshooting while keeping human operators responsible for final decisions. Munro emphasized that AI should enhance human performance, not replace it, with the system designed to work alongside operators while ensuring human decision-makers remain firmly in control.
