ByteDance Doubao Paid Version Pushes WPS Into a Corner With Built-in …

ByteDance's launch of a paid Doubao subscription with built-in productivity tools is pressuring Kingsoft's WPS in China's office software market. Doubao Pro, priced from 68 to 500 yuan per month, includes an integrated office suite capable of generating, editing, and exporting documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, supporting direct export to PPTX, PDF, and image formats without watermarks. This comes days after Kingsoft faced user backlash over WPS storing cache and cloud backup files on the system C drive regardless of user configuration, consuming tens of gigabytes of space, prompting a special investigation team. WPS's advantages in template libraries and format compatibility are eroding as AI-native tools generate content from natural language prompts. The emerging format standard is Markdown (.md), a lightweight open plain-text format. Kingsoft's WPS Lingxi agent introduced skill systems and scheduled tasks, and its Qingqiu Agent achieved a 69.96% score on SpreadsheetBench. Kingsoft invested 2.095 billion yuan in R&D in 2025, representing 35.34% of total revenue, but its 2025 annual revenue of 5.929 billion yuan contrasts with ByteDance's Volcano Engine targeting 25 billion yuan in AI cloud revenue. Doubao's 180 trillion daily token consumption enables cost structures WPS cannot match.
