Six years after the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 was set out on July 29, 2020, promising that every child would learn coding and computational thinking from around class VI, the question is whether it has reached every child. Per the Education Ministry's UDISE+ 2023-24 data, only about 57% of schools have a functional computer and barely 54% an internet connection, with states stretched from over 90% connectivity in Delhi, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh to under 20% in West Bengal and Bihar. Where wiring exists, CBSE offers AI as a skill subject from class VI; where it does not, coding survives as a chapter read aloud with the computer switched off. From 2026-27, AI and computational thinking are set to begin as early as class III. The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 states analytical thinking is the most prized skill, AI and big data the fastest-rising, and nearly two of every five skills are expected to change by 2030.
