A 73-year-old woman named Trudy Perez is proceeding with a civil suit targeting Starship Technologies for liability and negligence after a 2023 incident at Arizona State University. Perez, who was working as a parking garage attendant at the time, alleges a delivery robot operated by the company repeatedly ran into her, throwing her to the ground and clobbering her again while she was down. A police report notes Perez suffered a four-inch gash on her arm, in addition to back pain and mobility problems. She is now seeking compensatory damages related to medical expenses, pain and suffering, and lost wages. The lawsuit alleges the experimental Starship unit was being piloted by an off-site employee who neglected to “exercise control” over the delivery bot. Starship Technologies’ attorneys claim Perez’s injuries were caused by her own negligence and were pre-existing. The first court date is set for next February.
