A coalition of music industry groups, including the RIAA, IFPI, the Grammys and SAG-AFTRA, launched a new labeling program on Friday to indicate whether a song was produced with AI. The groups introduced two suggested labels: “AI-Generated,” for tracks where the lead vocal and key instruments were generated or the song was entirely produced by a prompt, and “AI-Assisted,” marking whether AI helped with “some expressive elements” as humans created the tune. The labels are set at the track level and do not currently apply to AI’s use for lyrics, compositions, music videos or cover art. The organizations hope the labels will provide clarity for fans on streaming services, where AI-produced music has proliferated. Other groups joining the effort include the American Association of Independent Music, the Worldwide Independent Network, the European Independents Association and the Human Artistry Campaign. The move comes as streaming services have taken two approaches to labeling AI music, with Spotify and Apple Music placing the onus on artists, while Tidal tags tracks itself and bans royalties from such work.
