A new report published Tuesday by the European nonprofit AI Forensics reveals that the open-source AI platform Hugging Face has a widespread problem with nonconsensual deepfakes. Researchers tested nine of the top image editing Spaces on Hugging Face, and seven easily changed a clothed image of a woman into a topless one. In further testing, AI Forensics created honey-pot-style Spaces and tracked over 1,000 prompts and images received over a week, finding that 73 percent of prompts were sexual in nature. Among these, 83 percent sought to undress or sexualize the person in a submitted photo, with 95 percent of these being women, and 6.7 percent of sexual requests targeted apparent children. An additional WIRED review found multiple pages promoting nudifying technologies or AI models that could create sexualized images of named celebrities and politicians. Ahead of publication, Hugging Face did not respond to WIRED’s questions about content moderation. After publication, Hugging Face provided a document stating the findings indicate a “gap” in safeguard adoption by some developers, but questioned the researchers’ methodologies, claiming they could have led to false positives and that the prompts gathered are “not representative” of typical platform use.
