Meta has launched advanced AI image generation tools for Instagram and WhatsApp, powered by the Muse Image feature built by Meta Superintelligence Labs and integrated into the Meta AI chatbot. The tool allows users to edit and create images using prompts and sketches. Instagram and WhatsApp each have more than 3 billion users globally, though Muse Image will initially be available only in "limited countries," with a broader rollout expected in the coming weeks. Meta plans to launch the feature for its other apps, including Facebook and Messenger. Muse Image powers more than 30 new AI-powered effects on Instagram Stories and image generation in direct chats with Meta AI on WhatsApp. Meta also previewed its AI video generation tool Muse Video, expected to roll out soon. The company stated the feature brings it "one step closer to personal superintelligence," a goal CEO Mark Zuckerberg has pursued since announcing in 2024 that Meta was pursuing artificial general intelligence. In June 2025, Zuckerberg officially launched Meta Superintelligence Labs and has since spent billions of dollars to acquire top AI talent from rivals like Anthropic, Google DeepMind and OpenAI.
