A review of Sebastian Mallaby’s book *The Infinity Machine* about DeepMind boss Demis Hassabis presents two contradictory impressions of AI. The first is foreboding: AI’s creators are almost all men, described as “a brash and brilliant autodidact,” who are mostly ahistorical and inclined to seek perfect solutions. Hassabis wants to “assemble a council of the hundred wisest people from all corners of the Earth,” which the reviewer calls utopian unwisdom. Sam Altman of Open AI said: “I cannot imagine figuring out how to raise a newborn without ChatGPT.” The AI titans are “fantastically competitive,” consumed by an arms race. One, Larry Page, attacked Elon Musk for being a “speciesist” who wishes the human race to continue. “The one who becomes leader in AI will be the ruler of the world,” said Vladimir Putin in 2017. China has its DeepSeek. The second reaction is that these wizards are seeking truth. Hassabis’s biggest idea is Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) achieving “singularity,” when machine intelligence surpasses human intelligence. The machines “weaponise” pattern recognition. Hassabis said in his Nobel Prize speech: “Any pattern that can be generated or found in nature can be efficiently discovered and modelled by a classical learning a”.
