Shares in Bloomsbury Publishing PLC rose 2% after the publisher confirmed it stands to receive roughly $21 million from the $1.5 billion settlement of a copyright class action against Anthropic. The US District Court for the Northern District of California listed 14,087 Bloomsbury titles as covered, with about $3,000 payable per work, worth around $42 million, split equally between author and publisher. Payments are expected in several instalments, with the first in the second half of the current financial year. The case, brought in 2024 by novelists Andrea Bartz, Charles Graeber, and writer Kirk Wallace Johnson, alleged Anthropic trained its Claude models on books from pirate libraries. Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín granted final approval on 20 July, in what lawyers describe as the largest copyright recovery in US history, covering close to half a million books. Anthropic must destroy original torrented files. The judge cut plaintiffs' lawyers' fee award from $187.5 million to about $101.5 million. The claims rate was 92.77%, with 350 class members opting out. The settlement does not establish legal precedent. Bloomsbury held £29.2 million of net cash at 28 February, listing capital allocation priorities as organic investment, debt repayment, dividends, and bolt-on acquisitions.
