According to Similarweb data, ChatGPT's web traffic has decreased since November, when Google launched Gemini 3, while Gemini traffic increased by 28.4% month-over-month in December, and ChatGPT traffic decreased by 5.6%. ChatGPT still has the lead, attracting 5.5 billion visitors in December compared to Gemini's 1.7 billion. Year-over-year, ChatGPT traffic is up 49.5%, while Gemini's traffic is up 563.6%. The data, first highlighted by Menlo Ventures partner Deedy Das, only accounts for site visits to chatgpt.com and gemini.google.com. Gemini 3 triggered a "code red" at OpenAI, with CEO Sam Altman reportedly telling staff to prioritize ChatGPT while pushing back other product plans. Altman later said on the "Big Technology" podcast that Gemini 3 did not have "the impact we were worried it might," but it identified "some weaknesses in our product offering."
