Google Gets First AI Response From Space Under Project Suncatcher - B…

Google successfully executed an artificial intelligence workload aboard a satellite in orbit and received the generated output on Earth under its Project Suncatcher initiative, completing its first end-to-end computing demonstration in space. The experiment involved transmitting a command to the prototype satellite, activating its onboard Tensor Processing Unit (TPU), executing an artificial intelligence prompt and receiving the response on Earth. The output was a haiku, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in a post on X, describing the exercise as a "hello world" milestone for the project. The demonstration used Google's Gemma 4 model on an onboard TPU. The prototype satellite was launched on 1 October aboard SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare mission, and Google developed the spacecraft in partnership with Planet. The next phase of the programme will assess processor performance under the environmental conditions of orbit, including evaluations of hardware reliability under radiation exposure and temperature fluctuations. Google's research has examined heat pipes and radiators as potential mechanisms to transfer heat away from processors and dissipate it into space. Project Suncatcher also examines the possibility of operating multiple spacecraft as an interconnected computing system, and the company plans to test two interconnected satellites in 2027.
