Brad Lightcap is leaving OpenAI, ending an eight-year tenure as one of the company’s longest-serving executives. His departure comes as the AI lab prepares for a high-stakes public offering and seeks to justify a valuation that reportedly reached $852 billion. Lightcap joined OpenAI in 2018 after working with Sam Altman at Y Combinator. In March 2025, his COO title expanded to cover business and day-to-day operations, global deployment, business strategy, key partnerships, infrastructure, and operational excellence. By January 2026, he had stepped back from leading product and engineering within the enterprise push, though he retained oversight of commercial functions. Enterprise leadership briefly passed to Barret Zoph, who also departed roughly five months later. In April 2026, Lightcap officially stepped down as COO, moving into a role focused on special projects and reporting directly to Altman. Chief revenue officer Denise Dresser took over most of his responsibilities. Lightcap announced the news in an internal memo, saying he plans to “start something new” and is “excited to help you all advance the mission from a different vantage point.” Altman responded publicly, writing that Lightcap “took on any function and challenge openai has needed” and that “we would not be where we are without you.” The exit fits a pattern of departures hitting OpenAI’s senior ranks.
