IBM Cognos Analytics 12.1.3 is built for the reality that Business Intelligence teams face every day, bringing agentic AI into the governed BI layer. This release helps teams move faster while staying connected to approved data, metrics and security rules. The new version comes with four key capabilities: Data Query Agent (Preview), which lets users ask questions in natural language and receive answers based on trusted business context; Report Authoring Agent, which helps create and format reports from plain language requests; Governed AI workflows, which reduce manual work without bypassing lineage, access controls or audit requirements; and MCP, which exposes Cognos as governed tools for AI assistants and orchestrators. One of the most important changes in 12.1.3 is Bring Your Own LLM, allowing users to connect a supported large language model, whether self-hosted or cloud-based, into the Cognos agentic framework. This gives clients flexibility by providing a governed BI foundation and agentic capabilities while allowing organizations to retain control of their model strategy. Another key shift in 12.1.3 is MCP support, which allows Cognos BI agents and APIs to participate in broader enterprise workflows.
