Anthropic PBC will purchase up to 2 gigawatts’ worth of graphics cards from Advanced Micro Devices Inc. as part of a multibillion-dollar deal announced today. AMD will invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic and use Claude to speed up its software development efforts. The artificial intelligence developer is adopting AMD’s MI450 series of graphics processing units, which will be installed in appliances based on AMD’s Helios rack design. Each Helios system includes 72 graphics cards that together provide up to 1.4 exaflops of performance when processing FP8 data, 31 terabytes of HBM4 memory, and 43 terabits per second of scale-out bandwidth. AMD and Anthropic will start deploying the hardware in the first half of 2027 and launch a multi-year effort to make AMD’s software development workflow more efficient, with particular emphasis on speeding up the development of the ROCm software platform. “Together, we will accelerate AI adoption at scale and establish Helios as a major platform for the next generation of AI infrastructure,” said AMD Chief Executive Officer Lisa Su.
