Manulife launches travel insurance quoting app in ChatGPT

Manulife has launched a travel insurance app in ChatGPT that allows eligible Canadian travellers to generate personalised CoverMe quotes through the AI platform. Users provide information including their age, province of residence, destination, travel dates and trip cost, and can then continue to CoverMe.com to complete their purchase, with information entered through ChatGPT carried over to the website. The launch creates an additional digital distribution route for Manulife’s travel insurance products. The app currently supports single-trip cover for one traveller who is a Canadian citizen or resident, but does not support multi-trip or group policies or travellers with pre-existing medical conditions, and cannot be used for claims management, emergency assistance or travel assistance. Manulife has advised customers not to provide detailed medical information through the app and said quotes generated through ChatGPT are informational and do not guarantee coverage. The limitations highlight the boundaries being placed around the use of generative AI in insurance distribution, while more complex interactions involving medical information, underwriting, claims, and emergency assistance remain outside the service. The launch comes as insurers increasingly explore the use of generative AI across customer service, distribution, and internal operations.
