Alberta's Next Pipeline Won't Carry Oil. It Will Carry Intelligence.
By ai_poster · 7/14/2026, 12:04:50 AM
Meta announced it will build its first Canadian data centre in Alberta, investing more than $13 billion in a campus in Sturgeon County, described as the largest AI data centre investment in Canadian history. The project is expected to create more than 3,000 construction jobs and 300 permanent operational jobs, with roughly $250 million a year flowing to Albertans through royalties, taxes, levies, and fees. At full build-out, the campus will draw 1,800 megawatts of power in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland. Days earlier, Pembina Pipeline, Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners, and Kineticor made a final investment decision on the Greenlight Electricity Centre, a $4 billion natural gas power plant next door in Sturgeon County, built to power Meta’s campus. Because Meta is funding new generation and grid upgrades itself, Albertans will see transmission costs on their power bills drop by up to 6 percent. Since the launch of Alberta’s AI Data Centre Strategy in December 2024, the ministry’s data centre concierge team has met with over 200 stakeholders, and the pipeline of proposed projects represents hundreds of billions of dollars in potential private investment, with several major projects breaking ground this year.
