U.S. House Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr., D-New Jersey, demanded documentation and a tour of SpaceXAI's Colossus and Colossus 2 data centers in Memphis on July 28, via a letter to SpaceX Founder and CEO Elon Musk. The letter, sent after a recent meeting with SpaceXAI leadership and the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, stated, "We need to be putting real, substantial federal guardrails in place to restrict their impacts on monthly power bills, the power grid, and our air and water." Pallone requested a list of all natural gas turbines at the sites since January 2024 and the number of additional turbines planned until 2028, along with all communication regarding power generation with state and local parties, all permitting for natural gas turbines, emission reports, water usage and contamination studies, and records regarding the Colossus Water Recycling Plant in Memphis. Documentation is requested by Aug. 11. The letter follows a visit by Democratic members of Congress Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley, and Summer Lee to Shelby County, and several lawsuits against SpaceXAI and its affiliates, including a May preliminary injunction filed by the NAACP for alleged Clean Air Act violations at its Southaven power plant, which is the location of more than 50 turbines.
