Google updated its privacy policy last month, with the changes coming into effect in the middle of October and the updated terms taking effect on October 16. Under the updated policy, data from Google Workspace apps such as Gmail, Drive, Calendar, and Meet, along with Google Photos, “may” be used by Google services to show personalised ads, but only if the user chooses to connect one of the apps with Google services like Search and Gemini. Previously, Google said data from its apps would not be used to present personalised ads in Google Search and Gemini. Google says the data is not directly shared with advertisers and that personally identifiable information, including names and email, is not shared with advertisers “unless” the user asks Google to do so. Besides Search, connected app data can be used for services including Discover, Maps, Shopping, Flights, Hotels, Translate, and News. In Google Search, users must enable personalised recommendations to connect Workspace apps, and connected apps can be managed from the Gemini app. According to an Android Police report, personalised ads cannot be turned off automatically by removing connected Workspace apps; users must visit My Ad Center to turn tailored campaigns off manually.
