Anthropic is in a dispute with the Trump administration over the release of its AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5. On Friday, the White House imposed strict export controls on the models, banning their use by foreign nationals, which Anthropic said forced it to pull them offline "to ensure compliance." In a blog post, Anthropic stated the US government cited "national security authorities" but did not provide specific details. Anthropic pushed back, saying "the potential jailbreaks that have been disclosed to us are either entirely benign responses or are minor findings that provide no Mythos-specific uplift." Before the crackdown, senior Trump administration officials tried to persuade Anthropic to voluntarily take Fable 5 offline following concerns raised by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, through tense phone calls between Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and officials including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and White House Cyber Director Sean Cairncross. Senior Anthropic officials have since traveled to Washington, DC, to meet with White House officials. The dispute could set a major precedent for the AI industry. The export controls barred access to the models for any foreign national, including some of Anthropic's non-US employees.
