In 2023, Hinz started a new job a week earlier than planned, and after informing the employment agency by phone, he was mistakenly overpaid unemployment benefits totaling 242.34 euros, leading to fraud charges. Not provided with a free public defender and unable to afford a private lawyer, Hinz defended himself with AI. ChatGPT explained legal intricacies, helped formulate an objection, and worked with him for a week on an 18-page motion regarding the judge's bias, which was granted. The case was transferred to another judge, and the proceedings were subsequently dropped. A study conducted at Stanford shows that lawyers using AI assistants worked 6% more accurately and approximately 26% faster, with AI involved in searching for evidence and pointing out possible errors, though final decisions remained with humans.
