George Hotz of Comma.ai and Tinygrad today announced the Tiny Chestnut eGPU Dock and the "Chestnut" Dock complete with an AMD Radeon RX 9060 8GB GPU, both running on open-source firmware. The primary focus of the Chestnut is to allow for larger driving models for Comma.ai's advanced driver-assistance systems, expanding from a 10 Watt compute footprint to 100 Watts. This launch coincides with a new 1B parameter driver model and the soon-to-launch OpenPilot 0.11.2. The dock can be mounted under a seat or in the passenger footwell of a vehicle. It can also be attached to a typical PC, functioning like other USB4 docks, and is compatible with Tinygrad usage. The firmware, published on GitHub, is C-based for the ASM2464PD USB4/Thunderbolt to NVMe bridge controller. The Tiny Chestnut eGPU Dock retails for $249 USD, while the Chestnut with the Radeon RX 9060 included is $799 USD.
